KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC men's golfer McCain Schellhardt has been named the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Golfer of the Week for March 13-19, the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon. This is Schellhardt's first honor of the 2018-19 season and second in his career. The junior from Edmond, Okla., was tabbed as Golfer of the Week back on April 11, 2018.
"This was a huge win for McCain and his confidence," said UMKC head coach J.W. VanDenBorn. "Opening with a five-over front nine and shooting 13-under the rest of the way says a lot about his game and his maturity as a competitor. He has had such a strong year for us this will do nothing but boost his confidence and propel him into the rest of our season. Special things ahead for him."
Schellhardt picked up his first No. 1 finish of the spring season at the Grand Canyon University Invitational in Phoenix this past weekend. He tied with Columbia's Derek Kim with an 8-under-par 205 (69-68-68). The effort was his second career win, with the other coming at the 2018 WAC Championships. Over the weekend, he tied for the second most birdies with 15 and claimed an eagle on the par-5, hole No. 10 during round two. He was a part of a UMKC program to run away with the team championship in Phoenix finishing 23-under-par to win by 14 strokes over second-place UT Rio Grande Valley.
The Roos next compete at the Tiger Invitational, hosted by University of Missouri, on April 8-9.
