KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s golf team opened up the 2018 fall season with a fifth place result in the Northern Intercollegiate at the Rich Harvest Farms (par-72; 7,281) in Sugar Grove, Ill., topping Big Ten foes Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as WAC opponent Grand Canyon.
The Roos finished the three round event at +22 after rounds of 299, 301 and 286, with the final round 286 standing as the second lowest round of the day.
McCain Schellhardt led the Roos in the event, tying for fourth at even par. Schellhardt finished the opening round at +1 with a pair of birdies, while adding four more birdies in round two, including three in his bogey-free front nine. He then closed out the event with a trio of final round birdies, notching back-to-back birdies on the par-4’s of Nos. 8-9.
Francois Lagraulet was the Roos next highest finished, tying for 23rd at +5. The Frenchman tallied three birdies in round one for a +1 and added six more birdies in round two, including back-to-back on Nos. 1-2 and Nos. 6-7, while opening with a birdie on No. 11 and closing with a birdie on No. 10. Lagraulet then finished the event with an even par 72 in round three that included four birdies including his third straight on the par-5 No. 2
At +12 in a tie for 47th was Paul Foulquie. Foulquie started the event slow with 78 and 84 on day one with four birdies, but came out hot in round three. In the final round, Foulquie carded the lowest round of the tournament with a 66 that featured zero bogies and six birdies, including three straight on Nos. 5-7.
Making his UMKC debut, Daniel Gaspar tied for 50th at +13. Gaspar registered six birdies in the event, including two each on Nos. 11 and 2.
Taylor Larsen rounded out the UMKC lineup in a tie for 72nd at +19 after three birdies in each of the first two rounds.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Sep. 30-Oct. 2, when they take part in the Jackrabbit Invitational at the Prairie Club in Valentine, Neb.
