OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The UMKC men’s golf team enters the final round of play in the Bill Ross Intercollegiate in second position, two shots behind leader Grand Canyon, at the Milburn Country Club.

“This morning we played solid all the way through the roster,” Head Coach J.W. VanDenBorn said.  “Sam [Humphreys] played a great round of golf and he put us in a great position.  The wind was a little strong in the afternoon and we could have handled that a little better from a mentality standpoint. We will try to build upon what we did in the morning going into round three.”

Leading the way for the Roos after two rounds of play is Francois Lagraulet (Bordeaux, France) who sits in second place at -4, one shot off the lead, with rounds of 71 and 69.  The junior had an up-and-down opening round tallying five birdies and four bogeys, before adding six more birdies in round two, as well as an eagle on the par-5 8th.

Sam Humphreys (Edmond, Okla.) got out to a hot start, shooting a 66 in the opening round to sit atop the scoreboard after 18 holes of play.  In round one, the junior played bogey-free, carding six birdies, including back-to-back birdies twice on Nos. 8 and 9 and Nos. 16 and 17.  Humphreys slipped into a tie for fifth at -2 after round two, but added two more birdies on the day.

McCain Schellhardt (Edmond, Okla.) and Paul Foulquie (Paris, France), meanwhile, are both tied for 13th entering round three.  Schellhardt started slow in round one, playing the front nine at +2, but fought back on the back nine with three birdies to finish with a first round 73.  He then matched his 73 in round two, carding birdies on two of his final four holes of the day.  Foulquie closed out his opening round with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 1 and 2 before adding 16 pars in round two to sit at +2 after two rounds.

Raphael Lapierre-Messier (Quebec, Canada) rounded out the UMKC lineup with four birdies over rounds of 74 and 78 and sits in a tie for 52nd.

In the event, the Roos had four players playing as individuals, including Jack Hermeston (New Castle, England), Matthew Sieg (Osseo, Wis.), Nick Auer (Wichita, Kan.) and Taylor Larsen (Garden City, Kan.).  Sieg and Larsen lead the way for the quartet as both are tied for 39th, while Hermeston is tied for 45th and Auer is 69th.

South Dakota’s Matt Tolen, meanwhile, is the individual leader at -5.

“We have to play better tomorrow and tighten some things up,” VanDenBorn added.  “It didn’t feel like we played great golf today at any point, but we still have a really good chance to win the tournament.”

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again tomorrow morning when they tee-off in the third and final round of play in Bill Ross Intercollegiate.
