KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (11-4) fell 4-3 in the finale of the Black & Gold Tournament to Howard (3-11) at Barbara Williams Field in Montgomery, Ala.
The top of the order powered the Roos in the contest as lead-off batter Sydney Garcia finished 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and a homerun. From the two hole, Alexis D’Ambrosio went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI and a stolen base, while Bre Hunter finished 1-for-4 with a double and cleanup batter Chyanne Onstad went 2-for-3.
The two squads started the game slow, as each went scoreless over the first two innings.
In the top of the third though, Garcia sent a blast to right to put UMKC ahead 1-0.
The Bison, though answered back in the fourth with four runs to claim the lead.
The Roos would be held scoreless from the fourth through the sixth, but began their comeback attempt in the seventh.
In the final frame, Madason Shaw reached on an error, stole second and advanced to third on an error. Garcia then singled to score Shaw, before scoring on D’Ambrosio’s triple. D’Ambrosio was left stranded on third after Hunters fly to left found the bottom of the Howard defender’s glove.
On the mound, Kailyn Packard closed out the game for UMKC and continued her hot performance, tossing 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit with six strikeouts.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Mar. 8 when they head to Lawrence, Kan., for the Kansas Invitational against Maine at 11 a.m. CT.
