LAWRENCE, Kan. – The UMKC softball team (4-12) took Kansas (17-3) down to the final out in a highly contested 4-3 loss to open play in the Jayhawk Invitational Thursday evening.

Senior pitcher Lynsey Conner (Peggs, Okla.) was given the start in the circle for the Roos and put together a solid performance on the night. In her eighth start of the season, Conner went the distance in six innings of work, allowing four runs on seven hits and picking up a strikeout in the contest.

After Kansas put up a single run in the bottom of the second inning to open scoring for the game, UMKC responded with some offense of their own in the top of the third. After loading the bases, Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.) drove in Tiler Noyola (Montgomery, Texas) with an RBI single to center to square the game up at 1-1.

The team was unable to cash in further, stranding the bases loaded with a strikeout to end the threat. Kansas would tack on single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to reclaim the lead for a 4-1 advantage heading into the final frame.

Through six innings of play, the Roos offense struggled to get anything going against Kansas starter Andie Formby, scratching across just one run on five hits. The bats came alive in the seventh inning as the team made a late comeback to close the gap.

After the first two UMKC batters failed to reach base safely to start the final inning, Maegan Rollow (Broken Arrow, Okla.) drew a walk and was followed up by a single from Olivia Fluehr (Loves Park, Ill.) to bring the tying run to the plate. It was Goodwin once again who came through with a big hit, squaring up a 1-2 pitch down the right field line for a two-RBI triple for her third run batted in for the game. The comeback would fall short with Goodwin stranded at third to end the contest.

The Roos will continue play in the Jayhawk Invitational tomorrow night with a matchup against Tulsa at 7 p.m. CT.
