KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team unveiled the 2018 season schedule on Tuesday. The 2018 slate features 16 home games that will be played at Urban Youth Academy, the new home of the Roos. Additionally, the schedule holds a full 55 games that includes five power-five opponents and a slew of quality mid-majors.
“The most exciting part of the season will be opening up in March at Urban Youth Academy,” commented head coach Meredith Smith Neal. “We are ecstatic to call UYA home this season and hope that we can represent Kansas City softball well at this amazing facility.”
The 2018 season kicks off with the Ramada UNI-Dome Classic in Cedar Falls, Iowa, taking place Feb. 9-11. UMKC is slated to match up with South Dakota State in the regular season opener and will take on Drake, Green Bay, Southeast Missouri State and Northern Iowa at the event.
UMKC will head for warmer weather for five games in Madeira Beach, Fla., the following weekend. From Feb. 23-25, the Roos will compete in the Red and Blue Classic that holds games against Ole Miss and North Dakota State.
The team will take part in the Blues City Classic in Memphis, Tenn., the following weekend. The five-game event includes a pair of games against Bradley in addition to contests with UL-Monroe and Memphis.
UMKC will return to Kansas City to host Creighton on Tuesday, Mar. 6 for midweek battle in the 2018 home opener before partaking in the nearby Jayhawk Invitational and Rock Chalk Challenge on consecutive weekends. The two events wrap up tournament play for the team and include notable games with Kansas, a pair of 2018 rematches with Northern Iowa and Green Bay and contests against St. Louis University and Nebraska.
The Roos play their second midweek contest of the season on Mar. 20 at Missouri State before opening up a three-game set with South Dakota State on Mar. 24-25. A trip to Baltimore, Md., will serve as the last nonconference road trip of the season, as UMKC takes on Morgan State for a pair of games in addition to playing UMBC.
Western Athletic Conference competition opens with the Roos hosting New Mexico State for three-game set on Mar. 30-31 before traveling west to square off with Seattle U for a trio of games the following weekend.
Utah Valley comes to town for three matchups with the Roos on Apr. 13-14 before the team gets a break in WAC play for a third and final midweek battle at Creighton. UMKC then returns home to resume conference action, hosting CSU Bakersfield for a three-game set on Apr. 20-21.
A trip to the desert on Apr. 27-28 awaits the Roos as the team plays three games against Grand Canyon to wrap up WAC play for the season. UMKC finishes the 2018 slate as they host South Dakota on May 4-5. The final game of the set, May 5 at 11 a.m. CT, will be Senior Day for the Roos.
“The 2018 schedule is shaping up to be a great one,” noted Smith Neal. “Our preseason gives us a variety of locations and opponents that will challenge us as well as prepare us for conference play.”
This year’s WAC Tournament will return to New Mexico State and begin May 9.
