LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The UMKC softball team (13-30, 4-5 WAC) endured back-to-back setbacks against New Mexico State (20-17, 8-1 WAC) to wrap up the three-game series on Saturday.

In the first game of the twin bill, the Aggies added a run on the board in the first inning to take the early lead over UMKC. Junior Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.) tallied the Roos’ first hit of the game in the second inning, hitting a single up the middle.

Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.) made it on base for the second time to lead off the fourth inning with a single to left field. New Mexico State scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth to take a commanding 6-0 lead over the Roos.

Two more runs in the bottom of the fifth by the Aggies helped New Mexico State grab the 8-0 shutout victory in five innings.

New Mexico State didn’t waste any time in the second game, scoring seven runs on six hits in the first inning.

Maegan Rollow (Broken Arrow, Okla.) hit a two-out single through the right side in the second, but would be left on base. The Aggies extended their lead in the bottom of the inning, tacking on three more runs to lead UMKC 10-0 after two.

In the third, Abby Warkentine (Auburn, Kan.) hit her first triple of the season to right field, putting herself in scoring position. Pinch hitter Alex Gale (Steeleville, Ill.) was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat to put runners on the corners for Faith Willis (Kearney, Mo.). Willis singled through the right side, sending Warkentine home to put UMKC on the board.

Goodwin hit a lead-off single in the fourth, and advanced to second on an error, to continue momentum for the Roos. Freshman Lia Lombardini (Chesterton, Ind.) was dealt a walk in the next at-bat and Alex Larson (Overland Park, Kan.) followed with a single to center field to load the bases. A two-out single to center field by Leach brought two Roos home to cut into New Mexico State’s lead.

An Aggie hit a lead-off double in the fifth, and made her way around the bases, to give New Mexico State the 11-3 win and series sweep.

UMKC will return to Missouri 3&2 Complex for its final five home games of the regular season next week. The Roos will host Creighton for a doubleheader battle on Tuesday before hosting Seattle U next weekend.
