LAWRENCE, Kan. – The UMKC softball team (7-19) capped the weekend with a 7-5 victory over the Omaha Mavericks (9-16) on Saturday at Arrocha Ballpark.
Senior Abby Warkentine (Auburn, Kan.) led the Roos, going 3-for-4 from the plate with an RBI. Andra O’Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) pitched the final five innings for UMKC, collecting her first win of the season. The freshman came in for relief and allowed just one run on three hits.
“Andra did a great job coming in and shutting the door for us tonight,” commented assistant coach Michael Lewis. “She has been working really hard to get back to pitching the way she is capable of and tonight really showed that.”
Omaha jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs on just one hit. In the top of the second inning, UMKC responded with back-to-back home runs by Bri Sims (Rowlett, Texas) and Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.).
The Mavericks would score another run in the bottom half of the inning to take the 4-2 lead over the Roos going into the third inning.
UMKC produced four runs on three hits and one error in the third inning to jump out in front of Omaha, 6-4.
Each side would add a run to the board in the fifth inning, but UMKC would hold out for the 7-5 victory to end its competition at the Rock Chalk Challenge.
The Roos will travel to Riverside, Calif, on March 24-26 for the Amy S. Harrison Classic where UMKC will play two games against Pacific and UC Riverside.
