LAWRENCE, Kan. – The UMKC softball team (6-19) was unable to find its rhythm on the second day of the Rock Chalk Challenge, falling to Tulsa and Southeast Missouri on Friday at Arrocha Ballpark.

To start the day, UMKC was overpowered by Tulsa in six innings, falling to the Golden Hurricane, 9-0. In the top of the first inning, Tulsa jumped out to an early 6-0 lead that the Roos would never recover from.

Freshman Faith Willis (Kearney, Mo.) registered UMKC’s first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ashlin O’Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) lined into a double play, bringing Bri Sims (Rowlett, Texas) to the plate with two outs. Sims singled to left field, but would be left on base to end the inning.

A single by Willis and O’Brien in the bottom of the sixth inning would be the last chance at scoring for the Roos, as Tulsa extended its lead to 9-0 in the top of the inning, ending the game early.

In UMKC’s second game of the day against SEMO, each side remained scoreless in the first inning with one hit apiece. Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.) hit a two-out single through the left side, but was unable to advance any further.

The Redhawks posted a six-run second frame and added two more runs in the following two innings to take the game, 10-0, in five.

Newcomer Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.) bunted in the third inning and stole her seventh base of the season. In the following inning, Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.) singled to third and Abbi Johnson (Midwest City, Okla.) was walked in the next at-bat, but back-to-back stikeouts would leave the two Roos on base. Garcia bunted her second ball of the game in the fifth inning, going 2-for-3 from the plate.

The Roos will finish the Rock Chalk Challenge on Saturday night with a game against Omaha at 7 p.m. CT.
