LAS CRUCES, N.M. – A pair of UMKC softball seniors, in the midst of wrapping up exceptional careers, earned lofty recognition by the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) at the 2018 Postseason Banquet Tuesday evening. Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.) was named to the All-WAC first team while teammate Ashlin O'Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) received second team All-WAC honors.

Goodwin has put the finishing touches on her stellar four-year UMKC career with another strong season in 2018. Heading into the WAC Tournament, the senior is slashing .325/.375/.484, leading the team in slugging percentage in making 52 starts on the year. Goodwin has also smacked six doubles, two triples and five home runs in addition to driving in a tied for team-best 31 runs this season, good for ninth in the WAC.

Her performance in WAC play produced even greater numbers, slashing .386/.391/.409 with a double and four RBI’s. Her batting average in conference play ranks seventh in the league and her 17 hits against WAC opponents sits eighth. With at least two games left to play, Goodwin currently sits fifth in UMKC all-time history with 11 career home runs and seventh with 75 career RBI’s. Her .311 career batting average also sits seventh-highest in UMKC career history and her 33 career doubles ranks fifth.

O’Brien had an equally impactful season in her final year as a Roo, slashing .333/.428/.398 45 games and 40 starts in 2018, leading the team in batting average and ranking ninth in the conference in on-base percentage. The senior third baseman notched five doubles, a home run and 17 RBI’s on the season.

Like Goodwin, O’Brien upped her play against conference foes, hitting .364 and leading UMKC in on-base percentage (.440) and slugging percentage (.432) to pair with team-bests in doubles (5) and RBI’s (7) in WAC competition. Her stellar on-base percentage in WAC play is the ninth highest in the conference. O’Brien currently holds a .304 career batting average that is ninth-best in UMKC career history.

Goodwin and O’Brien will both look to finish their outstanding careers in strong fashion as UMKC begins play in the WAC Tournament tomorrow night at 8 p.m. CT with an opening round matchup against third seeded Seattle U. The contest will be broadcast on the WAC Digital Network and will have Live Stats available.
