KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team (14-31) split Tuesday’s twin bill against Creighton (16-23) at Missouri 3&2 Complex. A two-run walk-off home run by Morgan Byrn (Lawrence, Kan.) highlighted the Roos’ 6-5 victory over the Bluejays, before Creighton took the second game of the doubleheader, 11-5.

After two scoreless innings in the first game, back-to-back doubles by the Jays in the third, followed by a two-out single, put Creighton ahead, 2-0.

In the fifth inning, each side tallied a run to make it a 3-1 game. Bryn hit a lead-off long ball to left field in the sixth to cut into the Jays’ lead. Back-to-back singles by Bri Sims (Rowlett, Texas) and Kelsey Goodwin (Broken Arrow, Okla.), and a single by Maegan Rollow (Broken Arrow, Okla.), forced Creighton to make a pitching change. UMKC scored three unanswered runs in the sixth to take the 4-3 lead going into the seventh.

The Jays responded in the following inning, adding two runs on three hits, to regain the lead. Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh inning for UMKC. In the next at-bat, Byrn launched her eighth home run of the season to give the Roos the 6-5 walk-off victory.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Creighton tallied three runs in the first two innings to lead UMKC. The Roos responded in the bottom of the second, after a lead-off single by Goodwin resulted in a run for the junior, as she made her way around the bases.

The Jays extended their lead in the third by adding two more runs, but a lead-off solo shot over the left-field wall by Byrn cut into Creighton’s lead.

Sara Miller (Marietta, Ga.) worked a scoreless fourth inning in the circle for the Roos, before UMKC tacked on three runs in the fifth to knot the game at five-all. Creighton responded in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs of their own. The game would be called in the middle of the seventh inning due to a problem with the light fixtures, giving the Jays the 11-5 win.

UMKC will play its final home games of the 2017 season this weekend when it hosts Seattle U. Prior to the start of Saturday’s 12 p.m. CT contest, the team’s four seniors will be recognized for their accomplishments.
