Distance Runners Lead Roos on Final Day of Gorilla Classic

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC track and field team finished competition in the 3rd Annual Indoor Gorilla Classic at the Robert W. Plaster Center – Harvey Dean Track in Pittsburg, Kan., with a successful final day.

Christy Nell (Cape Town, South Africa) led the way for the Roos, breaking her own school record in the pole vault with a mark of 3.78 meters to place third in the event.

In the men’s seeded 3,000-meter run, Jason Fambrough (Raymore, Mo.) finished fifth with a time of 8:26.53 and Quinlan Moll (Springfield, Mo.) placed 10th with a time of 8:34.05, the third and seventh best times in school history, respectively.  Nathan Keown (Columbia, Mo.), meanwhile, took home the title in the unseeded portion with a time of 8:33.75, the fifth best time in school history.

On the women’s side, Sarah Jaloma (Atchinson, Kan.) came in fifth at 10:30.64 and Katherine Hanners (Jackson, Mo.) placed eighth at 10:42.02 in the unseeded section and Chandler Carreon (Lake St. Louis, Mo.) placed 12th in the seeded section with a time of 10:19.95.

In the mile, Mia Jerman (Ste. Genevieve, Mo.) and Elizabeth Nolke (Lee’s Summit, Mo.) each notched top-five all-time school performances with Jerman notching the second best time at 4:58.87, good for fifth in the event, and Nolke tallying the third best time at 4:59.04, good for sixth.

Darrien Case (Parkville, Mo.) narrowly missed his personal best in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.86, just .02 off his third place ranking and good for eighth in the event, while in the mile, Daylan Quinn (Mountain View, Mo.) finished eighth at 4:24.92 and in the 400-meter run, Jaquez Perry (St. Louis, Mo.) finished 13th with a time of 49.22.

In the 60-meter dash, Chadayne Walker (Portmore, Jamaica) placed 16th at 6.95 and in the 60-meter hurdles, Christopher Bryan (St. Catherine, Jamaica) and Fred Boyd (Detroit, Mich.) finished 12th and 16th, respectively with times of 8.32 and 8.39.

On the field side, Lukas Van Der Watt (Vrendenburg, South Africa) placed sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 4.88 meters, Perry Adderley (Nassau, Bahamas) placed 17th in the shot put with a throw of 15.24 meters and Jeremy Harr (Mukwonago, Wis.) came in 19th in the triple jump with a mark of 13.76 meters.  For the women, Matia Finley (Lawrence, Kan.) finished 19th in the shot put at 12.48 meters.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Friday for the Nebraska Tune-up in Lincoln, Neb., the last event before the WAC Indoor Championships.
