WICHITA, Kan. – The UMKC men’s and women’s track and field teams continued to improve across the board at the Herm Wilson Invitational, hosted by Wichita State, on Saturday. Sophomore pole vaulter Christy Nell had an impressive showing in her event, breaking the UMKC women’s indoor school record in the event after clearing 3.71 meters. Several student-athletes also turned in personal bests in their individual respective events.
On the track, Christopher Bryan finished second in the men’s 60-meter hurdles to advance to the finals with teammate Frederick Boyd. The pair finished with personal best times of 8.18 seconds and 8.21 seconds, respectively. Bryan also hit a personal best leap of 7.36 meters in the long jump in the field.
Chadayne Walker finished first in the men’s 60-meter dash preliminary race with a personal best time of 6.83 seconds, while Bryan and Shammawi Wellington both clocked in the sixth-fastest times of 7.12 seconds in the event. Walker continued to impress on the track, crossing the line in 22.64 seconds in the 200-meter dash, while Jamarice Preston finished in 23.24 seconds. Junior Traezon Henderson turned in a top-five performance in the 400-meter dash with a season best time of 51.12 seconds.
On the women’s side, Genel Rollins led the way on the track as the senior finished first in the 200-meter dash with a season best time of 25.22 seconds and fourth in the 60-meter dash preliminaries with another season best performance of 7.71 seconds. Louisa Nylander finished fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 200-meter dash and 60-meter dash, respectively, with personal best times.
In the field, throwers Matia Finley, Rebecca Finley, Perry Adderley and Jacob Hockman tossed a personal best in at least one of their two events they each competed in. Daiwa Emmert, Carolyn Ross and Leyla Edwards finished three-four-five, respectively, in the women’s long jump.
UMKC will have two more opportunities to gear up for the 2018 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships that are set to be held in Boise, Idaho, on Feb. 22-24.
