UMKC Track and Field Finishes Second at Conference Meet

NAMPA, Idaho – The UMKC track and field team battled on the final day of the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, but ultimately came up short to finish second on both the men’s and women’s side behind Grand Canyon.

Four Roos claimed gold medals in their respective individual events while the men’s 4x400-meter relay team also captured a gold medal. Graduate student Remy Abrought (Kansas City, Mo.) broke her own school record in the 60-meter hurdles that she set last night in the prelims by crossing the finish line in 8.35 seconds.

Junior Traci Mills (St. Louis, Mo.) finished sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.78 seconds after taking the gold medal in the triple jump with a personal best leap of 12.08 meters.

Sprinter Justin Martin (Kansas City, Mo.) crossed the finish line first in the 60-meter dash in 6.83 seconds, just 0.01 seconds faster than teammate Chadayne Walker (Portmore, Jamaica), who earned silver in the event.

Sophomore Jamarice Preston (Dallas, Texas) finished first in the men’s 400-meter dash, nearly 0.50 seconds faster than the second-place finisher, crossing the line in a season-best 48.17 seconds.

In the men’s and women’s 800-meter run, all three competitors for the Roos went three-seven-eight to contribute nine points to UMKC’s team totals. In the men’s 3,000-meter run, Bryce Miller (Ashland, Wis.) finished third with a time of 8:35.51 to lead the Roos. Teammates Jason Fambrough (Raymore, Mo.), Quinlan Moll (Springfield, Mo.) and Marcus Johnson (Nixa, Mo.) finished fifth, seventh and eighth, respectively, to contribute a total of 13 points to the men’s team total.

The NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships will be in College Station, Texas on March 10-17. The Roos will begin the 2017 outdoor season on March 17 at the ESU Spring Twilight in Emporia, Kan.
