MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The UMKC men’s soccer team will travel north for its first midweek matchup of the 2017 campaign when it visits Milwaukee on Tuesday, Sept. 12. Kickoff between the Roos and the Panthers is slated for 7 p.m. CT.
About the Roos
The 2017 season marks the 20th under the direction of Rick Benben. UMKC boasts a 34-24-6 (.578) record at its home facility and will play the most home matches in a single season at Durwood Soccer Stadium, hosting 11 opponents this season.
UMKC is the only team in the Western Athletic Conference to remain undefeated in the 2017 campaign, giving up only one goal – a penalty kick – on the year.
Starting goalkeeper Filippo Errico (Verona, Italy) earned WAC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 4 after making a season-high seven saves en route to his third consecutive shutout against Rutgers (Sept. 3), which currently ranks in a tie for the sixth-most in a single season by a Roo in UMKC program history.
Senior Eric McWoods (St. Louis, Mo.) was named the WAC Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 28 after finishing the two game series against Central Arkansas and Northwestern with eight shots, two goals, two assists and a conference-leading six points.
The Roos 2-0 victory over Northwestern (Aug. 27) marked the first time that the program has captured a win over a Big Ten opponent in school history.
About the Panthers
More than half of the 2017 roster will be appearing in a Panther uniform for the first time under the direction of head coach Kris Kelderman, as 17 of the 32 roster spots are held by newcomers. Four members of the team were honored with postseason awards last year - the most for the Panthers since 2006. In addition to the three earning spots on the All-Horizon League Second Team, newcomer Evan Conway received one of the specialty awards by being selected as the Horizon League Freshman of the Year. Nick Moon, Jonathan Stadler and Francesco Saporito were the trio that picked up second-team accolades, and all three are set to return to the field this fall.
UMKC will return home for a pair of games against Western Illinois (Sept. 16) and Missouri State (Sept. 19), before wrapping up the nonconference portion of its schedule at Drake (Sept. 23). The Roos home games against the Leathernecks and Bears will be broadcasted on the WAC Digital Network.
