KANSAS CITY, Mo. --- Three more incoming freshmen committed to the UMKC men's soccer team, announced head coach Rick Benben Wednesday. Kansas City local product Jack Mason (St. Thomas Aquinas) is joined by Aiden Cavanaugh (Saint Paul, Minn.) and Matthew Heery (Lake Villa, Ill.) for the 2019 recruiting class. The class now stands at 16 total athletes.
UMKC is going through a youth movement as the 2018 team lost 13 seniors due to graduation. During the final stretch of last season, the Roos pulled off victories in three of their four final games of the year, with a comeback win over Houston Baptist on senior day.
Aiden Cavanaugh | Saint Paul, Minn. | Saint Paul Central High School
High School: Comes to UMKC after a highly successful prep career, capping it off with All-State First Team honors and being named Conference Player of the Year as a senior... Statistically, played in 60 career games scoring 24 goals and posting 30 assists... Was a performer all four years on the varsity program... Three-time all-conference selection... As a senior, recognized on All-Section Team, All-State Tournament Team and a finalist as the East Metro Player of the Year... Helped team to a third-place finish at State as a senior, which is highest in school history... Part of a squad to record 54 victories over a four-year span, including the first undefeated regular season mark in school history... Named on the A-Honor Roll for three years... National French Exam gold winner... Won the outstanding achievement in calculus.
Personal: Son of Thaly and Mark Cavanaugh... Plans to major in Biology... Played club soccer for Steve Leonard and Dusan Jakica with the Saint Paul Blackhawks and Prior Lake Soccer Club.
What coach Benben says "Aiden is a great addition to our recruiting class. He is a good athlete that has excellent technical ability combined with a great work rate. Aiden is comfortable in many positions and will compete for playing time both in the mid-field and up front."
Matthew Heery | Lake Villa, Ill. | Grayslake North High School
High School: A three-year varsity starter on the back line... Named to the All-Conference and All-Area First Teams in back-to-back years... As a senior, was team captain, team MVP and on the Chicagoland Soccer All State watchlist... Part of a team to win the conference championship as a senior... Two-year varsity starter as a third baseman and catcher on the baseball team... Listed on the Honor Roll, National Honors Society and Academic All-Conference Team... Graduated with magna cum laude honors.
Personal: Son of Curt and Shelley Heery... Has one brother, Josh... Plans to major in Engineering... Competed on three club teams, including this past year for the Libertyville FC 1974 U18s for coach Srigan Smileski.
What coach Benben says "Matt is a good all-around athlete. He is an extremely dedicated young man who will compete along the back line. Matt combines good defensive qualities with an ability to play out of the back."
Jack Mason | Overland Park, Kansas | St. Thomas Aquinas High School
High School: In his final two seasons as a prep, scored 19 goals and 11 assists in 28 games... As a senior, led the team in goals and also was second in points scored... Honorable Mention Eastern Kansas League selection in consecutive seasons... Part of a team to win regionals three-straight years and participate at state... Highest state finish was fourth place as a junior... Competed on the rugby team as a senior.
Personal: Son of Brad and Melissa Mason... Has one brother, Mark... Plans to major in Sports Medicine... Competed on three club teams, including most recently the Kansas Rush Academy for coach Randall Porter.
