SEATTLE, Wash. – The shorthanded UMKC men’s soccer team (4-6-3, 2-3 WAC) closed its longest road stretch of the season with a 2-1 loss at No. 18 Seattle U on Saturday night.

Several yellow cards were shown to both sides before Pandelis Popgeorgiev (Budapest, Hungary) fired UMKC’s first shot of the match in the 18th minute of play, sending the ball just wide of the goal.

Teammates Alvaro Hernando (Bilbao, Spain) and Christian Anderaos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) followed closely behind with shots of their own, but were unable to get the ball through the back of the net.

A Roo was shown a red card for the second consecutive game, this time in the 41st minute of the match, forcing UMKC to play a man down for the final 49 minutes of action. In the closing minutes of the first half, the Redhawks jumped on the board to take the 1-0 lead.

Despite being outshot 11-5 in the second half, UMKC continued to battle. In the 85th minute, Seattle U netted its second goal of the night to take a commanding 2-0 lead over the Roos.

Less than 20 seconds later, senior forward Eric McWoods (St. Louis, Mo.) registered his team-leading eighth goal of the season to prevent the shutout. Teammate Enric Ferrer (Barcelona, Spain) sent the ball across the box, as it connected with the top of McWoods’ head.

Another shot by Popgeorgiev and McWoods would not get past Seattle U’s keeper, as the Roos dropped their third straight match.

UMKC will return home to host Grand Canyon (Oct. 20) and UNLV (Oct. 22) for a pair of matches at Durwood Soccer Stadium.
