About the Roos
Dealing with some injuries from this past road trip, head coach Rick Benben hopes to gain some of his key players back with the game against the Wolverines taking place on Saturday evening. Losing both games in Texas this past weekend, Benben will look to offensive playmakers in junior defender Antoine Precheur (Paris, France) and junior forward Tim Staerz (Bad Nauheim, Germany) to get the Roos back in the win Column in Orem, Utah.
Precheur has been a thorn in the side for opposing defenses as of late, scoring UMKC’s only goal against Incarnate Ward on Sunday and attributing to an offensive unit who had a total of 14 shots in the match against the Cardinals. It has been a revival season for Precheur, who leads the team in goals at two and cumulating four points so far on the season for the Roos.
Referring to Precheur’s counterpart, Tim Staerz consistent play has provided a boost to a struggling squad who has put up a total of seven goals on the 2018 campaign. Diving deeper into the stat book, Staerz has provided the Roos offensive unit with one goal, two assists and four points.
Describing the man between the posts, junior goalkeeper Filippo Errico (Verona, Italy) has lived up to his All-WAC Preseason Nomination thus far, collecting 37 saves for the Roos while only allowing 20 goals at an average of 2.06 goals allowed per game. Going up against other prolific WAC goalkeepers, Errico’s 37 saves puts him in fifth place respectively.
About the Wolverines
Since the start of conference play, the Wolverines have looked like a brand new team. Starting the season out at 3-4, Utah Valley has worked their way back to showing fans that they can contend with the powerhouse schools in the WAC, accumulating a 4-1 record in conference play, which has bumped up their overall mark in 2018 to a 7-5 record. With the 4-1 mark in conference play, the Wolverines sit in a tie for first play with Air Force. Led by Greg Maas, Utah Valley has won four straight dating back to their first conference game against Houston Baptist on Sept. 22nd.
Key players to pay attention to on Saturday evening for the Wolverines include redshirt senior forward Austin Buxton and junior forward Blake Frischknecht. Buxton, who is homegrown from Orem, Utah, leads the team in points at 10 and is tied for first with four goals. Keeping up in the stat column with Buxton, Blake Frischknecht has been made play after play for the Wolverines in 2018, racking up four goals on 29 shots and attributing one assist in the 12 games he has participated in. Frischnecht’s tenacity to be in the right spot at the right time for the Wolverines has resulted in nine points for the Las Vegas, Nevada native.
Scouting the opposite end of the field, redshirt sophomore Joseph Wheelwright has held his own for the Wolverines in the 2018 campaign. Wheelwright, who was recently nominated for WAC Defensive Player of the Week, is currently sitting in top five categories for goals against (8) and goals allowed per game (0.84) for the WAC this season. The Pleasant View, Utah native has been a key contributor to Utah Valley’s recent success in conference play and will look to keep the trend going when the Roos arrive on Saturday afternoon.
After completing Saturday’s match in Orem, Utah, the Roos will return home to face off against UNLV on Friday, Oct. 19th at 7 p.m. CT.
