About the Roos
With a slow start to the 2018 season that has resulted in a 1-3 record, head coach Rick Benben’s team hopes to get things back on track with the upcoming matchups against the Wildcats and Bears. Junior forward Tim Staerz (Bad Nauheim, Germany) has led the attack for the Roos thus far in the 2018 campaign, compiling one assist, three points, six shots and a game winning goal in double overtime against Oral Roberts on Aug. 31st. Junior goalkeeper Filippo Errico (Verona, Italy) has been prolific on the defensive unit for UMKC, obtaining 20 saves with a .714 save percentage.
The implementation of young players has helped the Roos on many ends as well, with freshman midfielder David Ray-Campoy (Barcelona, Spain) and freshman defender Jordan Salt (Eleebana, Australia) participating in all four games so far this season. Campoy leads the team in playing time with a staggering 378 minutes on the year.
About the Wildcats
Entering the season 2-1-1, the Wildcats are coming in looking to raise the bar from their 2017 campaign, where they accumulated a 7-12 (1-7) record. Northwestern looks to lean on their Big 10 preseason honorable mentions with senior midfielder Camden Buescher, sophomore midfielder Tommy Katsyiannis and sophomore defender Garrett Opperman. All three players are tied for second on the Wildcats with one goal apiece for the season.
About the Bears
UMKC will face Missouri State for the second time this season with the first matchup resulting in a 3-1 loss to Bears on Aug. 24th. Coming off a 9-5-3 record from the 2017 campaign, the Bears are looking a lot like last season’s team, obtaining a 2-0-1 record so far in 2018. Missouri State was voted from coaches in the conference to be the MVC Preseason Team of the Year. Senior forward Connor Ingram was tabbed as a preseason first team All-MVC selection for the Bears. Ingram, a native from Oxford, England, tallied seven goals for the bears on 39 shots last season. In 2018, Ingram has one goal, one assist and three points for his team through the first three games.
After Saturday’s matchup with Missouri State, the Roos will return home to Durwood Stadium to take on Air Force at 7 p.m. C.T. on Saturday, Sept. 22nd.
