KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The UMKC men’s soccer program has announced the signing of two student-athletes to National letters of Intent, head coach Rick Benben announced Wednesday.
The class will fill a void of 13 players lost from a 2018 program that went 5-12 overall and a 4-7 conference mark, good for ninth-place out of the 12-team league. Both Orellana and Payne will attend UMKC classes starting Fall, 2019.

Member of state championship-winning club team during his freshman, sophomore and junior years… Team captain for six overall seasons with two club teams… Honor roll student during entire four-year career at Abraham Lincoln High… Heading into his soccer high school season this spring, has tallied 23 career goals, 14 career assists and 60 career points… As a junior, recognized to the All-State Team for posting seven goals in 16 matches.
Quick facts: Played club competition West Des Moines Soccer Club and Sporting Iowa Academy… Son of Amilcar and Mercedes and has one brother, Brandon… Plans to major in Mathematics and Statistics.
What coach Benben says: “Roderick joins our program with a maturity in his play that will allow him to compete for playing time immediately. He is versatile, athletic and excellent from a technical standpoint. We are really looking forward to seeing Roderick in a Roo uniform.”

As a senior, earned both Missouri First Team Class 4 All-State honors and the Missouri All-State Goalkeeper of the Year award… In those 27 starts in goal as a senior, Payne posted 16 shutouts (13 solo), a .51 goals against average and 92 saves… During his final two years at De Smet Jesuit HS, compiled a record of 38-10-2 as the goalie of record… His HS team finished second in state competition when Payne was a senior… Mentioned with the scholar-athlete award all four years in high school… Also played baseball as a centerfielder and was all-conference on the diamond twice.
Quick Facts: Played club ball for the St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club and the Lou Fusz Soccer Club… Son of Drew and Christine Sticht and has three siblings, twin Luke, Ava and Adalyn… Luke will play soccer at Truman State University next Fall… Uncle (Matt Hejlek) played soccer at UMKC… Plans to major in Pre-Health Sciences.

He had a fantastic fall season at De Smet and showed great leadership as they advanced to the Missouri State Championship game. He is the nephew of Alum, Matt Hejlek, and it is always nice to keep things going with our soccer family.”
