KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s soccer team pulled out a win on Saturday night against Houston Baptist with a score of 4-3.
With the 2018 season coming to an end and the game against the Huskies taking place on senior night, the Roos came back from a from a 2-1 deficit heading into the second period to send all 13 seniors off on a good note.
During the first period, Houston Baptist got off to a quick start, scoring goals in the fifth and ninth minutes of play. Jumping ahead to the 31st minute in the match, senior forward Pantelis Popgeorgiev (Budapest, Hungary) scored his third goal of the season when he got set up in the box by fellow senior midfielder Chris Bellmann (Atldorf bei Nurnberg, Germany), making the score 2-1 closing out the first period.
Entering the second period of play, the Roos started their comeback on the Huskies when Mirko Orchi (Civitavecchia, Italy) nailed a free kick that curved over the Huskies goalkeeper in the 51st minute, tying the game up at 2-2 all.
Seven minutes later, Popgeorgiev delivered his second goal on the night as he got a nice touch pass from senior midfielder Christian Anderaos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and dribbled the ball through the Houston Baptist defensive unit to take the lead at 3-2. Just eight minutes after Popgeorgiev’s fourth goal of the 2018 season, freshman midfielder David Ray-Campoy (Barcelona, Spain) was set up in the box by Anderaos again and scored his second goal of the season while bumping the Roos to a 4-2 lead.
Campoy’s goal was the final touch on a memorable senior night and would help the Roos improve to 5-12 on the 2018 campaign. Even though this was the last game for UMKC and the 13 seniors who were apart of this team, head coach Rick Benben had some positive thoughts on the night and 2018 overall.
“Really proud of the guys and especially the seniors,” stated Benben. “Out ability to comeback against the odds was amazing.” “We have a strong nucleus returning and we are all looking forward to 2019.”
