MISSION HILLS, Kan. – UMKC women’s golf is in first place after shooting a collective 303 (+23) in the opening round of the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championship Wednesday at Indian Hills Country Club. Cynthia Diaz (Bucaramanga, Colombia) is tied for second and is one stroke back from the individual lead after shooting 73 (+3).

“We worked hard yesterday to come up with a game plan that would put us in a position to compete and the ladies did a great job executing that plan,” head coach Brianna Broderick said. “We left a lot of putts out there on the edges but remained patient, especially down the home stretch when the wind was starting to pick up. There are two more rounds of golf and we will continue playing our game and executing our plan.”

Diaz finished with 15 pars and a birdie on the 18th hole Wednesday.

Abbey Campbell (Garden City, Kan.) and Cyrielle Kern (Cuvry, France) are both tied for eighth individually after carding rounds of 76 (+6). Kern notched two birdies in 4-hole stretch on the back nine.

Mackenzie Black (Independence, Iowa) and Chandler Gallagher (Kansas City, Mo.) are both tied for 18th individually after shooting 78 (+8).

The Roos lead Seattle U by five strokes and New Mexico State by six shots. Grand Canyon’s Deanna Salvatori leads individually after shooting 72 (+2).

Thursday’s second round and Friday’s final round begin at 8 a.m. CT.
