KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Athletics welcomed Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple and Deputy Commissioner Myndee Kay Larsen on Wednesday, as conference officials expressed their excitement and enthusiasm during a press conference today on campus. Douple and Kay Larsen were joined by University of Missouri-Kansas City Chancellor Dr. Mauli Agrawal, Director of Athletics Dr. Brandon Martin and KC Sports Commission & Foundation President / CEO Kathy Nelson as the group shared their comments with an audience of Roo alumni, fans and supporters.
"We are thrilled to welcome UMKC back into the Summit League," said Commissioner Douple. "It all starts with academics, and when our Presidents and Chancellors looked at UMKC and what you have here academically on campus, at your professional schools and the commitment to athletics and academics... it's just a great win-win for us. You fit our profile academically along with our other members and that's the first major major point in this partnership."
On June 20, Kansas City Athletics accepted an invitation to rejoin the Summit League, a place in which the Roos held membership from 1994-2013. The Roos will become a full-competitive member of the Summit beginning July 1, 2020. All 16 varsity sports will be eligible immediately for conference championships. Kansas City will continue to compete as a full member of the Western Athletic Conference for the 2019-20 academic year.
