KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted its eighth annual Rockin' Roo Talent Show on Wednesday in the Student Union Theater on campus.
This year's event featured three celebrity judges – Jessica Schmitz (Assistant Athletic Trainer), Cassie Molitoris (Director of Community Engagement and Special Events) and Kenny Kantner (General Manager of Minsky's Pizza) – who were tasked with scoring various acts that included choreographed musical routines, eating contests and skits.
In the end, the men's track and field and cross country team walked away with the first-place trophy. For the first time in event history, there was a three-way tie for second place between the men's soccer, men's basketball and women's soccer teams. The women's basketball team claimed the third-place prize.
The men's track and field and cross country team act featured Quinlan Moll (Springfield, Mo.) playing the guitar and Bryce Miller (Ashland, Wis.) on the drums in an exciting musical act. Men's soccer forward Michele Drago (Bergamo, Italy) balanced objects on his chin, including a full length mirror and a ladder. Robert Knar (Mundelein, Ill.), a guard on the men's basketball team, performed a stand-up comedy routine, while women's soccer defender Niekie Pellens (Naarden, Netherlands) sang karaoke to round out the second-place tie. The third-place finish by the women's basketball team was highlighted by a musical act in which the team brought back alum Kim Nezianya (Carrollton, Texas) to lead the team in a musical act.
“This is always such a fun event,” commented Amelia Howard, Assistant Director of Academic Support. “The teams continued to step up their creativity with this year's acts. Some truly talented talented student-athletes take the stage. Once again, the student-athletes gave exciting performances and made the event a huge success.”
