DENVER, Colo. – UMKC has been named the inaugural winner of the Western Athletic Conference Academic Excellence Award for its success in the classroom during the 2016-17 academic school year.
The award is given based on a point system to the institution that performs the best in the following areas: average grade-point average for each undergraduate student-athlete, the average grade-point of each undergraduate student-body versus the average grade-point average of an institution’s student-athletes, and the most recent two-year average of institutional Academic Progress Rate scores.
“It is a tremendous honor to win the inaugural WAC Academic Excellence Award,” Director of Athletics Carla Wilson shared. “It is a true testament to the hard work that our student-athletes put in from their freshman year all the way to graduation in the classrooms at UMKC.”
UMKC was the most impressive across the league, as the Roos posted an average GPA of 3.34 across all 16 varsity sports. The student-athlete GPA is 0.18 points higher than the average UMKC undergraduate student. The Roos also hold the highest two-year average of APR scores at a school record 985 out of 1000.
As a whole, the conference posted an average institutional student-athlete GPA of 3.20, which is an average of 0.16 points higher than the institutional student bodies.
