Ursula Gurney, Deputy Athletics Director/SWA for UMKC Athletics, was recently elected to serve as the First Vice President for N4A, the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals. N4A is the official community of practitioners dedicated to the academic and personal development of student-athletes, preparing them for success. The Association is committed to the advocacy, education, professional development, and advancement of its over 2,000 members, while promoting integrity in practices on an institutional and global level. The N4A is an affiliate of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), and in recent years has become NACDA's largest member.
“The entire 'Roos athletics department is extremely proud of Ursula and what she has accomplished as a leader of N4A. Her election as the next First Vice President is a well-deserved honor.” says UMKC Athletics Director, Dr. Brandon Martin. “She has been a pivotal member of the athletics department executive leadership team for many years and I am confident in her ability to lead this organization for the years to come.”
In this prestigious position, Gurney will be a member of the organization’s executive leadership team and in 2020-2021, will serve as the organization’s president. Elected by the membership, Gurney’s leadership in N4A is extensive as she has served on the Board of Directors since 2012. On the Board she has served as the Historian, Division Director and Director At Large. In addition to her Board duties, Gurney has been instrumental in creation and execution N4A’s strategic plan and the recent reorganization of its structure. In 2015 she was recognized with the N4A’s Lan Hewlett Award and in 2018 she was awarded the organization’s Distinguished Service Award. She has also contributed to the Association by serving as a faculty member for the Leader-Manager Track of N4A’s Professional Development Institute (PDI). As incoming President, her main priorities for the organization will be to the full implementation of the new organizational structure and strategic plan, encourage collaboration with strategic partnerships, enhance and grow professional development opportunities, ensure fiscal responsibility and revenue generation, prioritize brand activation and communication, and elevate diversity, equity and inclusion.
“I am humbled by this opportunity to lead this great organization, and to give back to an organization which has given me so much,” says Gurney. “As the largest organization under the NACDA umbrella, I am excited to collaborate with our members, stakeholders, the Board and Executive Team to empower and elevate our Association and the student-athletes in which we serve.”
In addition to her role as N4A’s First Vice President, Gurney also serves on the NCAA’s Division I Committee on Academics.
