KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC volleyball team (7-12, 3-3) picked up its second straight Western Athletic Conference win with a 3-0 sweep of Seattle U (6-13, 2-4) on Thursday night at the Swinney Recreation Center.
“Consistency was a big key tonight,” Head Coach Christi Posey said. “Seattle wasn’t at full strength, but our kids took advantage. Alex Ratzlaff had a great offensive night and Alexia Morey really came alive. The entire team had a real intent about it tonight. I was pleased with the effort and the level of execution.”
Alex Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.) led the UMKC offensive attack, hitting .391 with 13 kills, six digs and an ace, while Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) added her eighth double-double of the season with 10 kills, hitting .286, 10 digs, two aces and two blocks.
“After some injuries, we finally have a set lineup and everyone feels comfortable together,” Ratzlaff said. “Being able to finally get comfortable with one another on the court is big and it feels like we finally clicked tonight.”
In the opening set, the two teams battled early, but the Roos broke a 7-7 tie with three straight, including kills from Mykal Sadler (Des Moines, Iowa) and Mikayla Martinez (Frederick, Colo.). UMKC twice stretched the lead to as many as eight before a Ratzlaff kill put the set away 25-18.
The second set was again close midway through. This time, the score was knotted at 14-14 when a 4-0 UMKC run, featuring kills from Ratzlaff and Alexia Morey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and an ace from Harrington, gave UMKC an 18-14 edge. The Redhawks would close the margin to as little as three, but Harrington ended the set to give UMKC a 25-19 set victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
UMKC then quickly put the match away with a 25-15 third set win. The Roos tallied the set’s first four points and extended the lead to 12-5 on a Morey kill. Seattle U would be unable to get any closer and the Roos would end the match with a straight 3-0 sweep.
Morey recorded six kills with a .714 hitting percentage, while Alli Schomers (Omaha, Neb.) finished with 13 assists and seven digs and Kynnedy Myers (Rose Hill, Kan.) registered 15 assists and six digs. Rhegan Spiegel (Savannah, Mo.), meanwhile, added nine digs and six assists.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Saturday when they welcome in Utah Valley for a 1 p.m. match on Oct. 14 at the SRC.
