HOUSTON, Texas – Despite a tremendous offensive effort, the UMKC men’s soccer team (4-4-3, 2-1 WAC) suffered its first setback in Western Athletic Conference play, falling to Houston Baptist (4-4, 1-2 WAC), 3-1, on Thursday night.

The Roos maintained possession for a majority of the first half, as Enric Ferrer (Barcelona, Spain), Chris Bellmann (Altdorf bei Nurnberg, Germany), Eric McWoods (St. Louis, Mo.), Pandelis Popgeorgiev (Budapest, Hungary) and Diego Serfaty (Sunrise, Fla.) each tallied at least one shot to give UMKC the 14-3 shot advantage going into the locker room.

The Huskies jumped on the board in the closing minutes of the first half, and opening minutes of the second, to take a 2-0 lead over UMKC with nearly 43 minutes left in regulation.

In the 73rd minute of action, McWoods dribbled the ball down the near side of the field to the end line, where he connected with a running Lorant Lettner (Budapest, Hungary) in front of the net. Lettner called for the ball and tapped it past the HBU goalkeeper to put UMKC on the board for the fourth consecutive game.

With time expiring, the Huskies added an insurance goal to take the game, 3-1, over UMKC.

Popgeorgiev led the offensive charge for the Roos, as his nine shots fell one shot shy of the program record and tied for second-most in school history. McWoods followed closely behind with a season-high eight shots, while Bellmann added three. A total of nine Roos combined for 29 shots on the night – just four shy of a conference match record in the WAC.

UMKC will have a week to prepare for a pair of contests at Utah Valley (Oct. 12) and Seattle U (Oct. 14).
