KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Three players from the UMKC women’s soccer team were recognized on Wednesday by the United Soccer Coaches for their success in the classroom along with their excellence on the field in the 2018 season.

Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.), Lexie Howard (Kearney, Mo.) and Abby Small (Kansas City, Mo.) were all selected to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region team, while Childers also landed on the Scholar All-America Second Team. Childers and Howard’s inclusion on the Scholar All-Region First Team along with Small’s appearance on the Second Team marks the highest number for a single season in program history. Adding to the list of tremendous accomplishments for the program, Childers became the first UMKC player to be named as a Scholar All-American.

The Roos’ spectacular work in the classroom accompanied a 2018 season in which the team captured their second-consecutive Western Athletic Conference (WAC) regular season championship, posting a 7-1 record in league play and appearing as top overall seed in the WAC Tournament. UMKC’s 16 wins overall on the year, including headline victories over major programs Kansas State, Iowa State and Creighton, set a new program record.

To be eligible for the prestigious awards, players at the NCAA Division-I level must be a junior or senior in their second full-year at the institution and have a cumulative 3.30 grade point average in addition to starting in at least half of their team’s matches. Elite performance on the field, as well as the classroom, ultimately serves as the deciding factor in being recognized with the award.
