DENVER, Colo. – UMKC women’s soccer forward/midfielder Lexie Howard (Kearney, Mo.) has been selected as the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week by the league office on Monday. It is the third time that Howard has been recognized with the honor in the 2017 season.
The award follows another perfect weekend of competition for the Roos, picking up a pair of victories over WAC opponents while also clinching the number one seed in the conference tournament. UMKC defeated UT Rio Grande Valley 2-1 in Friday’s match before claiming a 1-0 shutout win over New Mexico State on Sunday.
Howard has been the most dangerous offensive threat for the first place Roos throughout the entire season and played a huge role in both of the weekend victories. She scored the game-winning goal in both contests and led UMKC with five shots on goal over both games.
“Lexie really stepped up again this weekend and I am very proud of her being to claim this award for a third time,” said head coach Chris Cissell. “Scoring game-winning goals in both matches to keep us undefeated in conference play is a special accomplishment.”
Howard’s two-goal weekend puts her in second place in the conference with ten goals on the season. Additionally, the junior forward/midfielder ranks third in the conference in points (23) and shots (57). She is now the WAC leader in game-winning goals with five on the season. The Roos will continue to rely on Howard’s offensive prowess as they finish out the regular season and prepare for the WAC Tournament.
“We continue to preach that individual awards are directly related to phenomenal team performances,” noted Cissell. “Lexie came up with two huge goals but she would be the first to tell you that they were made possible by world-class assists.”
UMKC is wraps up the regular season with a road match at Chicago State on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. CT. A win in this match will secure an undefeated conference season and the WAC regular season championship for the Roos. Live Stats will be available for the game.
