DENVER, Colo. – UMKC women’s soccer midfielder Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.) and defender Halle Hamilton (Lincoln, Neb.) have been selected as the Western Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week by the league office on Monday.

The honors come after another dominant weekend for the Roos, claiming a 2-0 win over CSU Bakersfield and a 1-0 overtime victory over Grand Canyon. UMKC now stands alone atop the WAC standings with an unblemished 4-0 conference record and a 9-6-1 overall record.

“For our team to win both Player of the Week awards further shows just how great of a weekend we were able to put together,” commented head coach Chris Cissell. “Going on the road and picking up two shutout wins over quality WAC opponents is a phenomenal team accomplishment.”

Childers was dynamite on the offensive end for the Roos this past weekend, scoring all three of the team’s goals in the pair of matches, including a golden goal in Sunday’s game. All three goals were dazzling shots taken from beyond 20 yards. The overtime score against GCU was perhaps the best of all, fighting off a defender and firing a missile to the far post from 24 yards to clinch the victory.

It has been an impressive scoring run of late for Childers, now scoring goals in each of the past three contests. Each of the junior midfielder’s four goals on the season have come in the recent stretch and her two game-winning goals last weekend puts her among the top-five in the WAC with a total of three on the season. She finished with ten shots and five shots on goal in 145 minutes of action.

Hamilton was an equally important factor in extending UMKC’s winning streak to five games following the wins. She logged all 181 minutes in the contests from her outside back position, routinely marking the opposition’s top offensive threat.

The sophomore defender has been a key member of the Roos backline that has been nothing short of outstanding in the 2017 season. The two shutouts last weekend marked the fifth straight shutout for the team and the seventh shutout in their previous eight games. UMKC’s nine shutouts on the year ranks first in the WAC while their 14 goals allowed are tied for first in the conference with UT Rio Grande Valley.

“I am extremely proud of both Reighan and Halle as their performances this past weekend were exceptional,” noted Cissell. “We continue to emphasize that individual awards are only possible when the entire team is playing at a high level and that has certainly been the case with all our players in recent matches.”

UMKC is back in action at Durwood Stadium to host UT Rio Grande Valley on Friday, Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. CT. The Roos will then travel to square off with New Mexico State on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. CT. Both games will be broadcast free of charge on the WAC Digital Network.
