TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The UMKC women’s soccer team (5-6-1) rebounded quickly from Friday night’s shutout loss, finding a score in the opening minutes of play to take home a 1-0 win over Indiana State (5-6-1) in the final nonconference match of the season.

After struggling to find any offense in a 1-0 loss to Illinois State in their last contest, the Roos wasted little time in getting back on track. An early UMKC attack set up a corner kick for Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.). Childers’ ball was sent beautifully into the box, finding teammate Lexie Howard (Kearney, Mo.) who converted the corner into a 1-0 lead with a crafty header at the 1:47 mark.

The goal was Howard’s team-leading seventh of the season and marked the fourth time in five games that the Roos notched a score in the first three minutes of play. Howard, who finished the match with five shots and three shots on goal, is now tied for the Western Athletic Conference lead in goals and leads the conference in points.

UMKC continued to control the pace throughout the entire first half following the early strike. The Roos were flawless in their ball movement and maintained possession across the field, routinely setting up quality attacks.

The Roos continued to press on into the second half, holding on to a one goal lead that felt much larger because of their excellent performance. There were various opportunities for the team to extend their one goal lead but were unable to find an insurance goal. Their best look at their second goal came off a great individual effort from Childers as she fought off numerous defenders deep into opposing territory. Her pass across connected with Howard in front of the net, but her header sailed just high.

Defense was phenomenal yet again for the Roos, a strength that the team has been able to rely on throughout the season. UMKC limited Indiana State to just three shots on goal in the match and consistently found ways to take over possession. The shutout victory was the team’s fifth of the season.

“Holding a talented opponent to three shots on goal on the road is a very good outcome,” noted head coach Chris Cissell. “It was great team effort where all of our players contributed in limiting opposing chances and worked hard to come out with a win.”

Erin Roth (Eureka, Mo.) was awarded the start in goal for the Roos and came through with a solid performance protecting the net. While the UMKC defense continued to turn away the majority of opposing attacks, Roth was perfect in guarding the net as she collected three saves in her second shutout of the season.

“I thought we had some quality chances to stretch the lead out a bit as the game went on and felt like we were definitely the better team today,” commented Cissell. “We are certainly happy to pick up a road win against a quality nonconference opponent and we can build on this as we head into conference play.”

UMKC will head back home to prepare for the start of Western Athletic Conference play with a pair of matchups at Durwood Stadium. The Roos will square off with Utah Valley on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m. CT before hosting Seattle U on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. CT. Both matches will be broadcast on the WAC Digital Network and will have live stats available through UMKC Stats.
