KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The UMKC women’s soccer program has announced the commitment of Kylie Cushing and Maddie Smith to play for the Roos under the direction of head coach Chris Cissell, announced Monday.
“Kylie Cushing is a very athletic, attacking player with good technical skills that possesses great determination and grit,” commented Cissell. “Kylie first impressed coach (Jeff) Cole and myself at our UMKC identification camps and we are thrilled that she is joining our UMKC Soccer Family!”
“Maddie Smith is a phenomenal athlete who plays the goalkeeper position with a real passion and confidence,” said Cissell. “She will come in ready to compete at the highest level. Coach Cole and I have been recruiting Maddie for quite some time and we are excited that she will be joining our awesome UMKC Soccer family!”
Cushing and Smith are the eighth and ninth members of the 2019 class, that join seven other women’s soccer individuals who committed during the early national signing period (Nov. 15). The Roos captured their second-consecutive Western Athletic Conference (WAC) regular season championship in the 2018 season.

Cushing helped lead the Fort Zumwalt South Bulldogs to the school’s first-ever state semifinal playoff appearance in 2017. That year, the program finished with nine wins in its last 11 matches to complete a 14-13-2 record. She is an All-Gateway North Conference First Team performer.
Academically, Cushing was recognized the previous three seasons on the women’s soccer all-academic teams. She has been on the Honor Roll in every semester and ranked in the top 10% of her class.
Quick facts: Played club soccer in the Midwest Regional Red League for coaches Rick Kuehn and Tim Stewart… Competed in tennis as a prep and was the No. 7 singles champion and No. 1 doubles champion in the conference… Four-time First-Team All-Academic in sport of tennis… Member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Leadership League, Positive Peer Influence (Mentoring) and Women’s Choir… Daughter of Ryan Maus and Jessica Wildman... Has three sisters… Plans to major in Biology.

Maddie Smith | 5-7 Goalkeeper | Millard South HS | Omaha, Neb.
The goalkeeper was a huge reason her club team won state completion when Smith was a senior after finishing national runner-up her junior season. Smith is a four-time Nebraska All-State performer, boasting First-Team honors as a sophomore and junior. Throughout Smith’s high school career, she totaled 369 saves, a 0.874 goals against average and 27 shutouts. As a junior, she took the No. 3 spot in program history in career shutouts.
Smith holds the team record of goals against average and career games played with 53.
