DENVER, Colo. – UMKC women’s soccer defender Abby Small (Kansas City, Mo.) has been named the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week by the league office on Monday.
Small was a crucial piece in the Roos impressive weekend, picking up two huge conference wins over Utah Valley and perennial WAC power Seattle U. The sophomore defender led the way to limiting both opponents to a combined seven shots on goal in the two shutout victories.
Additionally, Small logged a complete 90 minutes in both matches. Her impressive energy and tactical defensive play forced numerous turnovers and greatly limited attacking chances for the Wolverines and Redhawks.
Her performance was even more impressive given the challenging task of shutting down Seattle U forward Jessie Ray, who ranks second in the WAC in goals scored. Small made a major impact in bottling up the talented Ray, holding her to just one shot on goal.
Small and the rest of the UMKC defensive line has been stellar thus far in the season, particularly of late allowing just one goal in their last six contests.
“I can’t say enough about the job that Abby, the entire back four, and our goalkeepers did this past weekend”, noted head coach Chris Cissell. “The two conference wins were very positive step forward for our program and receiving individual honors like this one is further evidence of our entire team playing at a high level.”
The Roos will travel to the west coast for a pair of conference matches riding a season best three-game winning streak. UMKC will play CSU Bakersfield on Friday, Oct. 13 at 9 p.m. CT and Grand Canyon on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. CT.
