WICHITA, Kan. – The UMKC men’s basketball team (0-1) was defeated 109-57 by the No. 7/8 Wichita State Shockers (1-0) in front of a sold-out crowd on Friday evening at Charles Koch Arena to open the 2017-18 season.

Sophomore Isaiah Ross (Davenport, Iowa) led UMKC with a game-high 12 points. Broderick Robinson (Grand Junction, Colo.) and Aleer Leek (Juba, South Sudan) also scored in double figures for UMKC, while Robinson grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

Five early points from Leek brought UMKC into two points of Wichita State to open the game. Robinson snatched his first board of the game, and drained a 3-pointer on the other end, to give the Roos an 8-7 lead in the first three minutes of the game.

Wichita State jumped out to a double-digit advantage, but UMKC’s third 3-pointer of the game – this time by Marvin Nesbitt Jr. (Chicago, Ill.) – brought the Roos back within nine.

With just under 10 minutes remaining in the opening half, Bishop found Ross behind the arc, who buried his first points of the game, to crush Wichita State’s 6-0 run.

Seven Roos had points on the board after the first 20 minutes of action, as Ross and Leek each registered five and Bishop contributed a pair of opening-half assists. Ross, along with Nesbitt Jr. and Tony Jackson (Montgomery, Ala.), contributed 11 points off the bench, as the Roos trailed 62-23 at the half.

UMKC pushed the ball in the second half and put added pressure on the Shockers, forcing 14 turnovers for the game. The Roos capitalized on Wichita State’s misfortunes, scoring 18 of their points off of Shocker turnovers.

The Roos went on an 8-0 run, while holding the Shockers to zero points, for nearly three minutes approaching the under-eight media timeout and closed the game on a 10-4 run. All 12 student-athletes saw playing time for UMKC, as Leek played a career-high 24 minutes to lead the team.

The Roos return to the court on Sunday when UMKC hosts Haskell as a kickoff to the Gulf Coast Showcase. Tipoff between the Roos and the Indians is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. CT at Municipal Auditorium.
