About the Roos

UMKC (2-4) resumes play after a tough weekend that saw the team drop matches to Drake and Iowa State. The team performed very well in the first half of play against Drake and took a one-goal lead on Lexie Howard’s (Kearney, Mo.) third goal in as many games. Three Roos – Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.), Abby Small (Kansas City, Mo.) and Liz Mann (Kansas City, Mo.) – have also connected on goals this season for UMKC.

The UMKC defense eyes a return to form in the weekend ahead. The last time the team played at home they were able to record two shutout victories over Illinois-Chicago (Aug. 25) and South Dakota State (Aug. 27).

The Roos are still searching for their first road win of the 2017 campaign and will look to breakthrough against Creighton. The team holds a 2-0 mark at home on the season and has a chance to keep their perfect record alive at Durwood Stadium against Omaha.

About the Bluejays

Creighton (0-5) is set to host their home opener against the Roos after playing five games on the road to open the season. The Bluejays have been tested with stiff competition early on in their schedule, squaring off in road matches with Iowa State, Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, South Dakota and South Dakota State. Creighton has struggled thus far to fill the void left by the departure of Lauren Sullivan who led the Bluejays in scoring in each of her four seasons for the program. Samantha Dewey is a player to watch for the Bluejays. The junior forward was tabbed Preseason All-Big East after a team-leading 20 points overall and three conference goals in 2016.

About the Mavericks

Omaha (0-4-1) is back at home Friday to host Missouri State before traveling to Durwood Stadium to face off with the Roos. Offense has been hard to come by for the Mavericks in the early portion of the schedule as they have scored just one goal in the five games they’ve played and have been shutout in their last four matches. UMKC will need to keep tabs on midfielder Lydia Holtmann, who was named to the Preseason Summit League Players to Watch List after finishing the 2016 season with ten points on four goals and two assists.

UMKC Athletics Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts

UMKC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be collecting monetary donations this weekend at all home UMKC athletic events to put towards Hurricane Harvey relief efforts in Houston, Texas. All proceeds will benefit the Houston Food Bank and the Texas Diaper Bank. UMKC SAAC representatives will be at the UMKC men’s and women’s soccer matches at Durwood Soccer Stadium on Friday and Sunday, respectively, as well as the UMKC volleyball matches during the Kangaroo Klassic at Swinney Recreation Center on Friday and Saturday. Although UMKC SAAC representatives will not be at the neutral volleyball matches between Rutgers, South Dakota and UNI, a donation station will be set up in the lobby.

Up Next

The Roos will take a trip to Missouri State on Friday, Sep. 15 at 7 p.m. CT before returning to Durwood Stadium to host South Dakota on Sunday, Sep. 17 at 1 p.m. CT.
