(Kansas City, Mo.)  - The UMKC men's tennis team (4-14, 1-1) registered its first Summit League win of the season when it took down league leader IPFW (11-9, 3-1), 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Plaza Tennis Center.

The two squads opened up the day with doubles action after a four hour rain delay with the Kangaroos taking two of the three tightly contested matches to secure the doubles point.

The 'Roos got on the board first when senior Gustavo Guerin and junior Abdulrahman Alawadhi took down Daniel Kang and Joao Freitas, 8-4, at No. 2, but the Mastodons quickly evened the score when juniors Tim Akhmedov and Grant Fleming fell at No. 1, 8-5, to Roberto Cabrini and Connor Andrews.

With the doubles point coming down to the No. 3 matchup, the UMKC pairing of freshman Conner Edwards and sophomore Tomas Patino found themselves trailing 6-3 to IPFW's Andres Cobos and Junya Saruta, but the 'Roos duo would reel off the next five games to take the match 8-3 and collect the doubles point.

In singles action, the Kangaroos quickly built their lead to 3-0 when Guerin beat Andrews at No. 4, 6-3, 6-0 and Alawadhi defeated Cobos at No. 3, 6-3, 6-4, but a 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) win by Martin Muadi at No. 6 cut the UMKC lead to two with three matches remaining.

UMKC would not have to wait long for the win though, as Patino would clinch the match for the 'Roos with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win over Kang at No. 2  to seal the match and give the squad its first Summit League win of the season.

From the No. 1 line, Fleming picked up the Kangaroos' fifth point when he came from behind to take down Cabrini, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, while Cameron Schoenhofer's match with Freitas at No. 5 went to the visitors, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Friday when they host Missouri Valley foe Bradley at noon at the Plaza Tennis Center.
