With this win, the Kangaroos ended a six-game skid along with avenging a 6-3 loss on Friday to the Wolfpack.
In the second inning for the Kangaroos with one on and one out, catcher Katie Henning singled up the middle as pinch runner Tara Wolf advanced to third. Next up, pitcher Cinda Ramos (8-4) singled to left as Wolf came into score for the first run of the game.
Later in the inning with two outs and two on, pitcher Jade Hennig (0-1) walked infielder Kelly Fischer to load the bases with outfielder Anna Sokolik coming to the plate. With the count full, the Bettendorf, Iowa native singled to left as Henning scored from third to give UMKC a 2-0 lead.
NC State then replaced Hennig with Morgan Peeler (5-4), who walked her first batter-faced, outfielder Emily Ott, as infielder Kaelene Curry scored to increase UMKC's lead to three. Next up, infielder Megan Ussary went down swinging to end the inning.
In the bottom of the second with one on and one out, NC State cut the lead to two when infielder Scout Albertson RBI-singled up the middle to bring home infielder Renada Davis from second. Ramos then answered by striking out the two next batters to keep it a 3-1 ball game.
Two innings later for NC State with one out and nobody on, same score, Davis and Albertson reached on an errors by Ott and Ussary. Next up, designated player Liz Williamson reached on a fielder's choice as pinch runner Kelsey Hoover was tagged out at second. To end the inning, Ramos recorded her third strikeout of the afternoon when catcher Kirsty Grant went down swinging.
In the bottom of the fifth with two on and one out, the Wolfpack had a chance to cut into the lead, but Ramos and the Kangaroo defense kept the score at bay by forcing two pop-outs to end the inning.
Next inning for NC State, the Wolfpack made it a one-score game when pinch hitter Sara Lippard RBI-singled through the left side as Albertson scored from second. Next up, infielder Chelsea Tate lined out to Curry to keep it a 3-2 ball game.
In the seventh with one out, same score, NC State's infielder Tori Ann Williford singled to left, followed by outfielder Caitlin Dent singling to right as Williford advanced to second. But, Ramos and the Kangaroo defense answered again by forcing two pop-outs to seal the win.
On the mound, Ramos completed her 10th game of the season giving up two runs and striking out three, while going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
Up next for the Blue & Gold will be two games at home against Wichita State this Wednesday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
