Jaloma and Kleiser Set School Records in Day One of the Iowa State Classic

(Ames, Iowa) -- Friday, the UMKC track and field team participated in day one of the Iowa State Classic. 

Notable finishes for the men included sophomore Kris Leverette placing fifth in the weight throw with a personal best mark of 58-10.25 (17.94) and junior Zach Mathias placed first with a personal best time of 14:39.88 in the 5,000 meters.  This performance by Mathias was the second best in UMKC indoor track and field history. 

On the women's side in the long jump, sophomore Michelle Momo finished second with a personal best mark of 18.04.25 (5.59).  This performance by the Fort Worth, Texas native was the third best in school indoor history.

In the 200-meter dash, sophomore Viola Kleiser set a school record crossing the finish line at 25.18 for 13th place on Friday.

Also, senior Jylian Jaloma set a school record in the 5,000 meters by finishing 13th with a time of 17:18.29.

Other notable finishes for the women included new personal best's set by senior Denise Banda in the shot put with a mark of 40-05.50 (12.33), freshman Briana Carter (57.79), sophomore Veronica Rollins (57.79), and senior Sa'Kia Taylor (57.54) in the 400-meter dash.

Day two of the Iowa State Classic is slated to begin Saturday at 11 a.m.
