Summit League Announces Winter/Spring Academic All-League Team

Elmhurst, Ill. -- With the spring semester of the 2010-11 academic year in the books, The Summit League has announced its Academic All-League Team for the winter and spring seasons. A total of 1,000 student-athletes from baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's track & field have been honored for their academic excellence. Of the 1,000 selections, 425 were recognized as Distinguished Scholars and 183 earned "straight-A's".  

In all, 88 'Roos were named to the Academic All-League Team, including 33 that were awarded Distinguished Scholar recognition.

South Dakota State led the way with a league-best 148 selections to the Academic All-Summit League squad, edging out Oakland which had 139 recipients. Southern Utah came in third with 113 honorees, narrowly ahead of Western Illinois' 108 student-athletes. North Dakota State landed 83 members to the honor roll followed by Oral Roberts (70 recipients). IPFW (67 honorees), IUPUI (64 honorees) and Centenary (63 honorees) rounded out the list. South Dakota had 34 student-athletes and Eastern Illinois landed 23 recipients as associate swimming & diving members.  

In order to be selected to the Academic All-Summit League Team, a student-athlete must have a 3.0 or better grade-point average (GPA) in the semester in which they compete and must use a year of eligibility. In order to be named a Distinguished Scholar, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.60 GPA.

The Summit League is comprised of 10 member institutions - Centenary College of Louisiana, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), North Dakota State University, Oakland University, Oral Roberts University, South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University. Eastern Illinois University and the University of South Dakota are associate members in swimming & diving. The league offers championships in 19 sports.
