Akhmedov and Fleming Team For Win As 'Roos Fall To No. 45 Bulldogs

(Kansas City, Mo.)  - The UMKC men's tennis team (1-11) fell 7-0 to No. 45 Drake (16-2) on Friday evening to at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa, despite a 9-7 win by the 'Roos No. 1 doubles pairing of juniors Grant Fleming and Tim Akhmedov over Cesar Bracho and Alen Salibasic.

The Bulldogs, though, would claim the tightly contested doubles point as junior Abdul Alawadhi and senior Gustavo Guerin dropped their match at No. 2 to Robin Goodman and Jean Erasmus after being forced to retire while leading 3-4 and freshman Conner Edwards and sophomore Tomas Patino fell to Anis Ghorbel and Grant Tesmer 9-8, losing the tiebreaker 7-3.

In singles action, Akhmedov lost to Ben Mullis 6-0, 6-1, while Guerin fell to Salibasic 6-1, 6-2 to give Drake its second and third points of the night.  The Bulldogs then claimed the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win by Goodman over Edwards at No. 5, before Alawadhi dropped his match with Jonathan Hadash at No. 4, 6-3, 6-1.

The 'Roos, though, would not go quietly in the final two singles matches as both Fleming at No. 1 and Patino at No. 2 forced his match to a third set super tiebreaker.  In the No. 1 match Ghorbel claimed the first set 6-3, while Fleming took set two, 6-3, to even the match at one set apiece.  The Bulldogs, though would be victorious with a 10-6 win in set three. 

Patino, meanwhile, won the first set in his match 5-7 before dropping set two, 6-2.  Drake's Erasmus, though, won the match with an 11-9 score in set three.

The Blue & Gold will be back in action again later this afternoon when they take on Green Bay in Des Moines, Iowa, at 4 p.m.
