In the second inning with the bases loaded and one out, UMKC leading 1-0, infielder Kelly Fischer RBI-singled up the middle to bring in catcher Caitlin Christopher from third. Outfielder Anna Sokolik continued the 'Roos hot start in the second with an RBI-single up the middle to bring in outfielder Megan Vicino from third.
Next up, outfielder/pitcher Emily Ott (1-0) singled in the infield and would later advance to second after an error by Utah Valley as infielder Kaelene Curry and Fischer scored to give UMKC a 5-0 lead.
In the third for UMKC with two outs and Vicino at second, same score, Curry RBI-singled to third and advanced to second on a Utah Valley error as Vicino scored to increase the Kangaroo lead to six.
To lead off the bottom half of the third, catcher Jamie North homered to left to make it a 6-1 ball game. Later in the inning with the bases loaded and two outs, catcher Deianna Russell RBI-doubled to left-center as three runners scored to close the gap to two.
Later in the inning for Utah Valley, North drove in her second run of the day when she doubled to left and would later advance to third on the throw as infielder Krystin Jachim scored from first to make it a 7-5 ball game.
Next inning for UMKC with one out and the bases loaded after pitcher Megan Peay (4-1) walked three-straight batters, Ott RBI-singled to left as Curry and Fischer scored to give the 'Roos a 9-5 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth with the score now 9-6 after a sac-fly RBI by Russell in the previous inning, Utah Valley loaded the bases with outfielder Marie Williams coming to the plate.
After pitcher Cinda Ramos (1) replaced Ott on the mound, Williams grounded out to second, but infielder Maddy Schulz scored from third to cut the Kangaroo lead to two. Next up, infielder Amanda Robinson RBI-singled to left as outfielder Kylee Brinkerhoff scored to make it a 9-8 ball game.
In the bottom of seventh with one out and a runner on second, same score, Ramos forced North to ground out to short, followed by Schulz going down on strikes to seal the win and her first save of the season.
With this victory, UMKC turned in its best offensive output of the year with a season-high in runs and hits (13). Leading the way was Ott going 2-for-5 with three RBI and Fischer going 2-for-2 with two runs, two stolen bases, and three walks, while Curry went 1-for-3 with two runs, two walks, and two stolen bases.
Also, Vicino went 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base, while Maples went 2-fo-4 with one RBI.
The second game of today's doubleheader is set to start at 6:25 p.m.
