(Honolulu, Hawaii) - Friday in the first of a doubleheader, the UMKC softball team (1-1) defeated Seattle (0-2) 1-0 to get its first victory of the year.
Making her first career start, freshman right-hander Cinda Ramos recorded a complete-game performance giving up no runs, five hits, walking one, and striking out five.
In the top of the third with two runners on and two outs, Ramos got out of the jam by striking out Bubba Morrow to end the inning.
The next batter, with runners at the corners, junior Emily Ott singled to left field to bring home Sokolik for the first and only run of the game.
In the top of the fifth with on one and two outs, Ramos recorded her fifth strikeout as Seattle's Jenny Hurst went down swinging to end the inning.
To end the game, after walking the leadoff hitter, Ramos forced three-straight infield pop outs secure the victory for UMKC.
"Today, we bounced back nicely after suffering a tough loss last night against DePaul," said head coach Meredith Smith.
Smith added that Cinda did a great job today of staying poised in some tough situations to come away with a win in her first start as a Kangaroo.
The Blue & Gold will be in action later again tonight against Hawaii (1-0) at 10 p.m.
