Columbia, Mo. -- The UMKC softball team (3-10) recorded their third win of the season when it defeated Southeast Missouri State, 7-1, on Friday afternoon at Missouri's University Field. Anna Sokolik (1-1) picked up the win on the mound for the 'Roos, as the sophomore tossed a complete game, allowing three hits and one run, while striking out four.
The Redhawks took the early lead in the contest on an RBI double in the bottom of the third inning, giving them a 1-0 lead.
The 'Roos would threaten in their next at-bat, putting the first three batters of the inning on base, but three straight groundouts ended the UMKC inning.
The Kangaroos again loaded the bases in the fifth, this time though, the squad capitalized and put five runs on the board. Chelsea Hartwig got the rally started with a one-out single and Sokolik followed it up by reaching on an error by the Redhawk second baseman.
Shortstop Kaelene Curry then reached after getting hit by a pitch. After a Kelly Fischer fly out, Emily Ott cleared the bases with a three-run double off the bottom of the left-centerfield fence, putting the 'Roos on top, 3-1. The next UMKC batter, Megan Vicino, reached base and advanced to second on an error that scored Ott and later came around to cross the plate on Amanda Kinn's RBI single, giving UMKC a 5-1 lead heading into the sixth inning.
After a scoreless sixth inning, the 'Roos tacked on two more runs in the seventh on a two-run single by Kinn, scoring Curry and Fischer and pushing the lead to the final margin of 7-1.
Kinn led the team at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Ott finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Fischer added two hits and a run, while Curry chipped in a hit and two runs. Vicino finished with an RBI and a run in the win.
The Blue and Gold will be in action again tomorrow when they take on the Saint Louis at 11:30 a.m.
