In the first for UMKC, infielder Kaelene Curry singled and advanced to second after a throwing error by the Jackrabbits, followed by infielder Kelly Fischer singling as Curry moved to third. Later after Fischer stole second, Curry scored on a wild pitch by Pam Nicholson (4-9) to outfielder Emily Ott as Fischer advanced to third. The 'Roos then made it a 2-0 game when Ott flew out to left as Fischer scored.
Next inning with two on and two outs for UMKC, Curry singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Jackrabbits as pinch runner Bri Wyatt scored to make it a 3-0 ball game.
In the third with one out, same score, UMKC infielder Megan Ussary tripled to right and later scored after the ensuing batter, catcher Caitlin Christopher, singled up the middle. After that, the Jackrabbits replaced Nicholson with Kori Seidlitz (3-8). Later, infielder Marlee Maples singled to left-center as pinch runner Ashley Whiteside scored from third to increase UMKC's lead to five.
In the bottom half of the third, the Jackrabbits made it a 5-1 game when infielder Marlee Peterson homered to center off pitcher Deanna Friese (8-10).
Two innings later with two on and two out, Curry singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by South Dakota State as infielder Chelsea Hartwig scored to push UMKC's lead back to five.
In the sixth, UMKC scored six runs, headlined by Hartwig driving in two runs when she doubled down the left field line to make it a 9-1 ball game.
On the mound, Friese allowed five hits and one earned run along with striking out six on her way to completing her 15th game of the season.
At the plate, UMKC scored a season-high in runs led by Curry going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run as she is now two shy from becoming the program's all-time leader in hits (201). Also, Hartwig went 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs, and a walk as Christopher went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Maples went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run.
Coming up, the Kangaroos will return home for a three-game series against IUPUI next weekend on Saturday (12 p.m. and 2 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.).
