Okonta Leads the Way for UMKC at Bill Easton Classic

(Kansas City, Mo.) - Saturday, the UMKC track and field program participated in its third meet of the season at the Bill Easton Classic hosted by Kansas University.

UMKC's top performer was senior D.C. Okonta who finished first in three events, including the triple jump event for the third time this season. 

Okonta also finished first in section eight of the 200-meter dash (23.50) and in section five of the 60-meter dash event (7.25).

Continuing with the men top performances, junior Daniel Mann placed first (2:36.10) and senior Redell Frazier finished second (2:37.46) in section one of the 1,000-meter run event.  Mann's performance was the fifth best in this event in UMKC indoor track and field history.

Senior Dontay Taylor also finished with a top-five UMKC indoor track and field performance with his second place finish in section two of the 60-meter dash event.  The Baltimore, Md. native finished with a time of 6.94, the fifth best finish in this event.

In section seven of the 200-meter dash event, freshman Xavier Kenny turned in his best performance of the season by finishing first with a time of 24.31.   

UMKC also had two male athletes, senior Kristen Hepburn (8.37) and Kenny (9.47), finish third in both sections of the 60-meter hurdles event.

As for the field events, junior Ramon Nelson had another solid day as he finished first in the weight throw competition and third in the shot put event.

In addition, sophomore Kris Leverette finished second behind Nelson in the weight throw event. 

In the long jump competition, Leverette finished third in flight one and Taylor finished second in flight two.

On the women's side, sophomore's Michelle Momo (26.15) and Jazmine Cooper (26.85) finished first in both sections of the 200-meter dash event. Cooper's day also included a fourth place finish in flight two of the long jump competition.

In the weight throw event, the 'Roos had three athletes finish in the top-three as freshman Dahila Dyson placed first, senior Denise Branda placed second, and senior Kimoya Hariott finished third.

Rounding out the rest of the field events for the women, freshman Briana Carter placed third in flight one of the long jump event and junior Susan Brueggemann finished third in the shot put competition.

Next up for the Kangaroos will be the Holiday Inn Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13-14 in Fayetteville, Ark.  Times and location are to be announced.
