‘Roos Finish Second Day of the Iowa State Classic On a High Note

(Ames, Iowa) - Saturday, the UMKC track and field program completed the final day of the Iowa State Classic.

Headlining the day UMKC was junior Cosmas Ayabei placing fourth in the 5,000 meters with an indoor school record time of 14:12.18.  With this outing, Ayabei now holds three of the top-five best performances in the 5,000 meters in UMKC indoor track and field history.

Yesterday in day one, junior Zach Mathias recorded the second best performance in this event with a time of 14:39.88.  After today, he sits third behind Ayabei and previous record holder John Thorpe (14:34.88).

On the women's side in the 4x400-meter relay, Group A (Sa'Kia Taylor, Viola Kleiser, Veronica Rollins, and Briana Carter) placed 13th with a school record time of 3:48.47.

For the second week in a row, Stephany Johnson recorded a top-five school indoor performance in the triple jump as she finished third with a personal best mark of 39-11.25 (12.17).  

Saturday's performances by the Kangaroo student-athletes concluded a successful weekend for the Blue & Gold. 

In day one, the men's performance were highlighted by Mathias' finishing first in the 5,000 meters and sophomore Kris Leverette placing fifth in the weight throw with a personal best mark of 58-10.25 (17.94). 

In addition, senior Redell Frazier placed 16th with a personal best time of 1:54.36 in the 800 meters.  This performance by Frazier was also the fourth best in school indoor history.   

On the women's side in the long jump, sophomore Michelle Momo finished second with a personal best mark of 18.04.25 (5.59).  This performance by the Fort Worth, Texas native was the third best in school indoor history.

In the 200-meter dash, Kleiser set a school record crossing the finish line at 25.18 for 13th place.

Also, senior Jylian Jaloma set a school record in the 5,000 meters by finishing 13th with a time of 17:18.29.

Other notable finishes for the women in day one included new personal best's set by senior Denise Banda in the shot put with a mark of 40-05.50 (12.33), Carter (57.79), Rollins (57.79), and Taylor (57.54) in the 400-meter dash.

Also on Saturday, freshman Courtney Frerichs traveled to St. Louis, Mo. to compete in the USATF Junior National Cross Country Championships.

In the 6K event, the Nixa, Mo. native placed 14th out of 39 runners with a personal best time of 22:08.

The top six finishers from Saturday's event will represent the United States in the North America, Central American, & Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships on March 17 in the Port of Spain, Trinidad. Click here for the full results.

Next up for the Kangaroos will be The Summit League Championships on Feb. 24-25 in Fort Wayne, Ind., hosted by IPFW.  Start times and other information have yet to be announced.
