Jackrabbits Slow Down Kangaroos, Take Game 75-62

(Kansas City, Mo.) - South Dakota State showed why they were the No. 2 team in the Summit League on Saturday night, pulling away in the final period and taking a 75-62 victory over UMKC at Swinney Recreation Center.

The UMKC (10-17, 4-11 SL) loss snapped a three-game home winning streak, while SDSU (20-7, 12-3 SL) bounced back after being upset in its last road game. The win for SDSU also completed a sweep of the season series against the 'Roos.

The Kangaroos started the game strong, jumping out to a 17-8 lead, capped by a fastbreak dunk from junior forward Thomas Staton with 14:25 on the clock. The Jacks made a charge, but the 'Roos didn't give up the lead until the 5:49 mark. After two ties at 23 and 26, SDSU closed the final five minutes on a 15-3 rally to take a 41-29 lead into the break.

The half was played at a torrid pace, with 60 shot attempts going up, including 35 from South Dakota State. There were only a combined four turnovers in the half. The difference for the half was rebounding, with the Jacks taking a 22-12 edge, including nine offensive boards that turned into 12 second-chance points. UMKC also took more than half of its shots from three-point land.

Reggie Chamberlain had nine points for the 'Roos, while three players had 12 each for SDSU, including leading scorer Nate Wolters.

The Jacks came out strong in the final stanza, pushing their lead to 19 by the first media timeout. They held the 'Roos offense in check as well, with UMKC hitting only two shots from the floor in the first 10 minutes of the half. At the end of that stretch, it was a 21-point Jackrabbit lead.

UMKC started to get back on track in the final 10 minutes though, and got as close as 12 at the 4:56 mark. SDSU didn't let it get closer than that until less than 30 seconds remained.

The second period catalyst for the 'Roos was Nate Rogers, as he tallied 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting. As a team UMKC hit only 35.7 percent in the half, while SDSU hit 42.1 percent. The score ended up 34-33 in favor of the Jackrabbits in the half.

The 'Roos were led by 17 from Chamberlain, while Trinity Hall had 14 points and seven boards. Rogers finished the night with 12 points. Wolters led SDSU with 20 points.

UMKC will play its final regular season road game on Wednesday night when it heads to Macomb for a battle with Western Illinois at 7:00 p.m.
