DENVER, Colo. – The Western Athletic Conference announced on Tuesday that the UMKC men’s cross country team has been chosen to finish second at the 2017 WAC Championships in a poll by the league’s coaches, while the women’s squad has been projected to finish fourth.

“The conference continually gets more competitive,” head coach Shameika McField said. “The eagerness kicks in, the excitement grows weeks out and then you vision yourself accomplishing your goal – that is our team. They have worked hard, not just at understanding the sport or themselves, but at how they are all pieces to the puzzle. If everyone works together and off of each other, then all the parts will run like a well-oiled machine.

The men’s team received one first-place vote and collected 31 points overall, ranking second behind league favorite Utah Valley, which tabulated 35 points in the coaches’ poll.

On the women’s side, the Roos were granted one first-place vote and received 33 total points – just a single point behind Seattle U – to fall into the No. 4 slot of the coaches’ poll.

UMKC will travel to Las Cruces, N.M., this Saturday for the 2017 WAC Cross Country Championships. The men’s race begins at 10 a.m. CT, while the women’s competition is set for 11 a.m. CT.
