KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC men’s basketball team announced its full 2017-18 schedule on Tuesday. The 32-game slate includes 13 regular season home games and one exhibition contest, as well as several matchups with teams that made a postseason appearance in 2017.
Under the direction of head coach Kareem Richardson – who will be entering his fifth season at the helm this year – UMKC made its first postseason appearance in the program’s 30-year Division I history in 2017, as the Roos defeated Green Bay on March 15 to advance to the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI).
The 2017-18 slate features contests with four 2017 NCAA Tournament teams in Wichita State, Kansas State, South Dakota State and conference foe New Mexico State, as well as three programs – UT-Martin, South Dakota and CSU Bakersfield – that received bids to postseason tournaments.
“Overall, we have another very challenging schedule,” Richardson shared. “It is going to be very critical that we learn how and understand what it takes to be able to compete at this level. We know our guys will be excited about the challenge.”
UMKC will open the regular season at Wichita State on Nov. 10, before hosting Haskell for its home opener on Nov. 12 at Municipal Auditorium as part of the Gulf Coast Showcase. A midweek trip to Big 12 opponent Kansas State awaits the Roos on Nov. 14.
Following a home contest with Loyola on Nov. 16, the Roos will travel to Estero, Fla., to participate in the Gulf Coast Showcase from Nov. 20-22. An opening game against Manhattan will begin the three-day tournament, as UMKC will be joined by Georgia Southern, Missouri State, Penn, Northern Illinois, Towson and Florida Atlantic on the trip.
A trek to UT-Martin will close the four-game road stretch on Nov. 26 and a home contest with South Dakota on Nov. 30 will close the month.
UMKC will spend the first half of December on the road at Southeast Missouri (Dec. 6), NC State (Dec. 9) and Incarnate Word (Dec. 16), before returning to Municipal Auditorium for a three-game set against Central Michigan (Dec. 19), South Dakota State (Dec. 22) and Avila (Dec. 28). UMKC’s final nonconference road game will be at USC Upstate on Jan. 2.
Western Athletic Conference play will open for the Roos on Jan. 6 at home against UT Rio Grande Valley and will continue up until the regular season finale at Chicago State on March 3. The Roos will take a break in the midst of its competitive conference schedule to play William Jewell at Municipal Auditorium on Jan. 23.
For the eighth year in a row, the 2018 WAC Men’s Basketball Tournament will return to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., from March 7-10.
